When a Converter Box is Not Enough – Understanding Your DTV Options

Posted by | Posted in Bones TV Show | Posted on 24-04-2010

February of 2009 marked a new era in the world of broadcast television. When the cutoff date of February 17, 2009 rolled around all analog broadcasts ended, replaced with clearer and sharper digital broadcasts. While in the end television viewers should enjoy a clearer picture, better service and more channel choices, the change will require some preparation and some research.
By now many television viewers are aware of their options for the digital television, or DTV, conversion. Viewers who already pay for cable or satellite service will not be affected by the conversion, since their television providers will be converting their own systems to the new digital format. For the most part it is owners of older televisions with antennas who will need to purchase a converted box and possibly a new antenna.
In theory owners of new digital televisions with an ATSC tuner should not be affected by the change either, but some research is required here. More on that later. Television owners should look at the manual that came with their set and look for the word ATSC. This term indicates that the television has a digital tuner and it should be capable of picking up any digital channels that are in range. It may be a good idea for television owners to scan the available channels frequently, as new digital channels are always coming online.
Those TV owners should also make sure that they are receiving all the broadcast stations in the area. If any are missing it is important to contact the station owner and ask two questions:
1) Have you started broadcasting in digital format?
2) Is your digital signal at full power?
If the answer to both of these questions is yes it is time to do some further research. . In many parts of the country residents are finding that the indoor antenna they have been using for years is simply not capable of pulling in all the digital channels that are available. If that is the case it is a good idea to research antenna options. In some cases a stronger indoor antenna may do the trick, but in other parts o the country a medium to large size outdoor antenna may be required. No matter what the outcome, it is important to check out the options well ahead of the conversion date.
Checking with friends and neighbors is a good way to determine whether or not an outdoor antenna will be required. If the next door neighbor is getting the digital signals with a digital converter box and an indoor antenna chances are you will be OK. If not, it may be time to look at installing an outdoor antenna or subscribing to cable TV.
If an outdoor antenna is required it is a good idea to do plenty of research and again enlist the help of neighbors. If your neighbor has an outdoor antenna that works great, ask what model it is. The more information you can gather about what works (and what doesn’t) in your area the better off you will be. Again, it is a good idea to install the new antenna well ahead of the conversion date. Be sure to scan the channels after the new antenna is installed, looking especially for those previously missing channels.
In some parts of the country even an outdoor antenna may not be enough, and those television viewers definitely have some choices to make. Cable television can be a good option, with its plethora of channels and choices, but it can be expensive. Those viewers who simply want to keep watching TV as they did before may want to ask their cable company about limited basic options. Each company will have a different name for this type of service, but most of the major carriers will have a bare bones package available for a bare bones price.
These basic packages are typically not widely advertised – for obvious reasons – but in many parts of the country they are nonetheless available. In the past this type of limited basic cable service was used by viewers who simply could not get good over the air reception, and this type of package will no doubt grow in popularity as TV owners test their sets and explore their options.

Movie News! 1/29/10

Check out the best in premium entertainment with Dish Network satellite TV. Dish has a huge variety of intriguing movie channels of every genre and is a reasonable way to spend less money for better entertainment! Here’s the lowdown on the movies scheduled for release today 1/29/10!

This film looks like a wild adventurous ride. What’s going on with children being placed in harm’s way in so many of recent movies? First you had Orphan, then The Lovely Bones, now this film where Mel Gibson plays a father whose daughter is murdered and he takes revenge. These stories are heart-wrenching for any parent to watch but somehow the plot surrounding the circumstance is always interesting enough to get us to theaters to watch it. You feel guilty for having been interested in it at all but then again, you know you were at the very least entertained and spent your whole experience at the edge of your seat. This is how I think this movie will be. Most people would watch a decent Mel Gibson flick. Add suspense, danger, revenge and decent directing and you have yourself a winner. I can’t see this movie being bad.

This romantic comedy stars Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell. This movie looks a little cheesy but you can’t go wrong with Hollywood heartthrob Josh Duhamel. Pictures do not do this man justice, in fact, he looks awkward in the pictures I’ve seen of him online but if you see him in on film, you just might just fall in love. Josh was also in the movie A Perfect Getaway along with Milla Jovovich. This was the first movie I’ve seen him in and he gave a great performance. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with his acting though the movie looks a little simple. The story is about a woman looking for love who travels to Rome to find romance and is courted by a group of unlikely men, a reporter in particular. This one would probably make a decent rental.

I was wondering what in the world this movie was about because I haven’t heard anything about it until now. I assumed it would be some type of boring and overlooked budget film until I checked it out online and realized that it stars Steve Buscemi. I became more curious. I discovered that the story focuses on a gambling addict who feels the need to cure himself of his addiction and get out of Sin City. He packs up and heads to Alberquerque, New Mexico, starts a new life with a new job but gets sent on assignment to Vegas. Can he keep himself under control, or will he fall back into the game? This drama might be quite interesting and Steve Buscemi rocks. Check it out at the movies or wait for DVD or Dish Net PPV.

Did you say Seven Pounds? Ten-Gallon Head? Love and a .45? Haven’t heard about this film? There might be a reason for that. It’s about a man who gets together with his friends and plans to kidnap his wife’s lover and ultimately carry out his revenge. Starring in the film are John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Tom Wilkinson. I enjoyed Tom Wilkinson’s performance in The Full Monty and many other films but I don’t think I’ll be running to theaters to check out this one. 44 Inch Chest is certainly number 4 on my list. Rental Recommendation:

I watched this movie last night and expected it to be very dull and slow moving. I rented it out of curiosity because I read a good review on it and decided to take the chance. There were few new movies available at the store that truly captured my interest. I always felt that Kim Basinger was an average actress who appears to lack emotional effect in every movie she has been in that I’ve seen and she is in this film. That was a downer for me at first but I figured Charlize Theron’s acting would overcompensate for Basinger’s.

I must say that I was very surprised with Basinger’s performance in The Burning Plain. She must be getting better with time or perhaps she needed a break to get a fresh start on her acting. Whatever she is doing to better her skills, it’s working because I thought she was great. Basinger plays the role of a married woman with three children who is secretly having an affair. Charlize Theron… do I really have to comment on how superb her acting is? I’m sure you can guess. This woman is amazing. She is the complete package. She is beautiful inside and out and her acting is absolutely impeccable. I was thinking back on my favorite actresses last night and was wondering why I never had her on my mental list. There is Kathy Bates, Judy Dench, Cate Blanchett and so on, but not Charlize Theron! I think so many people see how gorgeous she is and forget about the fact that she can out-act almost anyone. Needless to say, the acting was wonderful in this film.

Writer/Director Guillermo Arriaga did a great job telling three stories that would eventually merge into one without leaving the audience confused by alternating back and forth in time without making it obvious. He took the best parts of three different stories showing only the quality events that happen with each one and merged them at the perfect time for the whole thing to come together as one. The story was filled with tragedy but it wasn’t so dark that we couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and it ended on a positive note. He makes us wonder at the end of the movie what will happen next in the lives of the characters but he also gives us enough closure to fulfill our curiosity.

Precious A Night Out At The Movies

Posted by | Posted in Bones TV Show | Posted on 14-04-2010

I had a chance to go to the movies over the weekend. It was so difficult to settle on just one film with so many great choices. I originally intended to finally watch The White Ribbon. The anticipation was building ever since I read a great review online and saw a preview for the movie. I then realized that it is nominated for an Oscar for Cinematography, not to mention that it already won the Palm D’or, the highest honor at the Cannes Film Festival. The White Ribbon also won more awards and looks absolutely creepy and original- two attributes that will always spark my interest. I was disappointed when I checked the movie times and realized that it was not showing in the two theaters that are near my house! I asked the ticket sales staff at the theater when the film came out of the theater and they had never heard of it! Now that I know this film is a rare treasur, I want to see it even more. I certainly hope I don’t have to wait until it is released on video because you know that they’ll show half of the movie at the Oscars when they announce the nomination!

I was torn between The Lovely Bones, Precious and The Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson. I chose Precious because I had to see the performances that have been described as phenomenal by the press. This is the first time that we’ve seen the rising star Sabourey Sidibe who did a great job her first time around. Her character was abused in many ways by her mother and father and was a pregnant teenager who already had a daughter that was in the custody of her grandmother. Her mother was played my Mo’Nique who many people know from her television shows but I bet no one knew what an amazing actress she is. I was more taken aback by her performance than anyone else’s. The way this woman cries out loud in the film will make anyone cry.  It is so real that it’s utterly breathtaking. She certainly deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Mariah Carey’s character is the social worker who has a very short role in the film but she made it a quality role and seemed very invested in delivering nothing but her best acting. I must say that I was surprised at how good her acting really was and I am looking forward to seeing more of her on the big screen. I give her kudos for going on film without makeup. As a person who doesn’t even venture to the corner store without makeup, I’m sure it had to be a difficult choice.

We know that the acting is great but what about the story? I had an uneasy feeling in the beginning of the movie that there would be a few slices of inappropriate humor here and there and the directing looked a little shaky at first. The movie seemed to get better as it went along. The directing became more effective, the acting grew stronger and the plot got a little freakier. This is not a date movie by any means, as a matter of fact; it will turn your stomach for the most part. Watching Precious is like seeing a bad accident that is documented so well that you have to watch it out of sheer curiosity. I don’t know if I would call this film entertaining but I would certainly say that it was well done. The story was depicted in its raw form and was not sugar coated in any way. I appreciate it for what it is but I know I wouldn’t watch it a second time.

I look forward to seeing Shutter Island the second I can grab grandma to baby-sit because this movie looks like a guaranteed blast! I can’t believe Scorcese is taking a crack at horror! I’m so curious to see what happens in this film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I watched a long trailer for the movie when I went to see Precious and I was quite impressed. This horror/drama/adventure film looks like one heck of a ride, Scorcese style. I’ll be watching some great movies in the meantime during the week on the Dish Network premium channels. The following is a great lineup of movies to choose from this week.
